Reiki

Reiki is a very ancient practice, reintroduced by Dr. Mikao Usui in mid 1800’s. Reiki in Japanese means universal Life Force Energy. It is made of two parts, ‘Rei’— meaning universal, transcendental spirit, and ‘Ki’— meaning energy or power.
Although Reiki can be “hands-on”, unlike massage, Reiki is administered through a very gentle touch or with the hands not directly on the body. While the recipient is seated or lying down and fully clothed, the practitioner’s hand are often placed on or held above ‘chakras’ (energy centers) in order to align the chakras and harmonise the energy of the body.

Reiki is a method of connecting universal energy with the body’s innate power of healing. Reiki is simple and anybody can learn it. Self-treatment amplifies the life force energy in our body releasing the withheld emotions and energy blocks. Many people find it extremely effective for relaxation and find that they have a deep sense of wellbeing, peace and harmony on all levels following a treatment.
It has become a useful form of relaxation and connecting to friends for many students in the ChillOut Society and some of us use it in combination with various forms of massage. There are frequent meetings of ChillOut society members swapping healings and plenty of opportunities to receive healings (see below).
When working on others, Reiki is not ‘given’, it is made available. The client draws the energy they require. They must therefore wish to receive the healing.
Attunements and training: Reiki is traditionally divided into 3 levels, known as ‘degrees’, and at each degree you receive an attunement as well as training in how to work on this level. The first degree will hugely increase your natural ability to channel healing and familiarise you with chakras and healing modes. The second degree gives you a further increase in vibratory level as well as an increase in the power of your healing abilities. You will learn symbols to aid you and special emotional, mental and distance healing methods. The third degree is the Master level and at this level one dedicates oneself to healing and learns to attune others. In the ChillOut Society we run Reiki attunements whenever there is enough interest. Once a student is initiated by a Reiki master it is there for life. Even if one doesn’t practice it one doesn’t forget Reiki, its always there. Attunement affects each person individually depending on their vibratory level. One can increase the energy level and healing capacity by practicing daily and treating oneself.
Cost: This will depend on how many people are doing it. For students it normally costs around £30 for Reiki 1, and £50 for Reiki 2, but this depends on class size.
Next course: Courses run during term time, according to demand. There is normally a Reiki 1 in the first term, perhaps a second Reiki 1 in the second term, and if there is enough interest, a Reiki 2 usually runs during the second term. Check blog entries to find out when the last attunement was, or join our mailing list to receive notification when we next run an attunement, or contact us if you simply can’t wait to find out more!
Reiki drop-ins and healings: There is also the opportunity to receive Reiki at Tollcross community centre on Thursday evenings 6-8:30pm. Many of us go there regularly if you want to have a chat about Reiki or attunements. For directions see below:
Healing Groups: For those who have already received Reiki attunements, we have a healing group almost every Sunday where you can work with/on other Reiki students and help each other to learn. To receive invitations to these, join the reiki email list. Simon van Lieshout usually organises this by phone once he has your details.
