We always welcome new people who want to join us, whether that be to do simply to chill and be with us, take part in courses, become teaching assistants or join the committee and help to run the society.

Chilling with us (joining the committee)

If you like our philosophy, have something you want to share with us, say an idea of an event or workshop, please come and chill with us. contact us to find out when we are meeting, or come along to one of our drop-ins randomly. We like random.

As older members move away from Edinburgh or get more busy with work or final exams, we need some fresh enthusiasm to help us out with the general running of the society, bring in new ideas and influences, and carry the society forward into the next year.

We generally hang out together quite a bit in a chilled environment and get involved in massage or reiki but this is not a requirement either… though you’re likely to be the recipient of plenty of these as people are always keen to practise!

If you have any suggestions for a novel position in the society or wish to take one of the less defined roles (e.g. one of our long-standing members recently changed from wench to whipping boy) then all you need is to get along with us!

If you don’t already know us, contact us or come along to one of our drop-ins. You never know, it might change your life!

Becoming an assistant massage teacher

If you are very keen on massage and would like the opportunity to really get good and get a lot of experience with massage, the best possible way to do this is to help us to teach it.

Within 2 years you will be very good at massage and be an important part of the ChillOut Society’s massage teaching. To get there, you should attend the beginner’s course twice a week in the first term of the year, then continue the following semester with the intermediate massage course and begin teaching alongside existing teachers in the society. Those with a greater talent and committment are more likely to get there. The costs of courses will be subsidised for trainee teachers.

Courses & Activities

ChillOutWelcome to the ChillOut Society where you can learn various forms of massage, healing, chilling and living life to the full!

We’re a chilled out group of people at Edinburgh University (Scotland) whose sole pursuit is that of relaxation. We teach and share swedish massage, therapeutic massage, Indian Head Massage, Reiki, EFT etc. as well as good food, good hugs and good friendship. The ChillOut Committee are normally a great bunch to hang out with and open to new people and new ideas.

Massage courses

Most of the expertise and activity of ChillOut Society currently revolves around our massage courses. We teach different courses, including a one-day Indian Head Massage course, a 6-week beginner’s Swedish Massage Course and an intensive 8-week intermediate course in therapeutic & remedial massage techniques for students who wish to learn some of the tricks used by advanced practitioners without paying the full price for a professional course.

Reiki healing

We run Reiki attunements one or twice a year for those who wish to learn Reiki, and you can receive healing on a drop-in basis on Thursdays at Tollcross healing group, all year round (not organised by ChillOut, but many of us go there). The ChillOut healer’s group usually meets weekly- join the Reiki email list if you would like to swap healings with other healers.

Events Massage Service

The events massage service is available for societies, charities and private functions in Edinburgh doing seated shoulder massage (or even Reiki) - at ceilidhs, balls, fundraising events, parties, club nights- its all been done. Find out more…

Other activities

We run retreats in Roslin Castle a few times a year. EFT, timeline therapy, reflexology and hypnotherapy and many other workshops are all possible, depending on interest.

Most of the courses take place at Teviot House, Bristo Square, Edinburgh. To take part in the courses, you need to be a member of the ChillOut Society. The cost of joining is £3 for the year.
