Reiki
Pronounced “ray-key”, is a powerful but gentle and non-intrusive form of healing that conducts universal life energy to another person or to oneself, healing, relaxing, energising and enabling positive change. HistoryReiki is a very ancient practice, reintroduced by Dr. Mikao Usui in mid 1800’s. Reiki in Japanese means universal Life Force Energy. It is made of two parts, ‘Rei’— meaning universal, transcendental spirit, and ‘Ki’— meaning energy or power. What is it like?Although Reiki can be “hands-on”, unlike massage, Reiki is administered through a very gentle touch or with the hands not directly on the body. While the recipient is seated or lying down and fully clothed, the practitioner’s hand are often placed on or held above ‘chakras’ (energy centers) in order to align the chakras and harmonise the energy of the body. How does it work?Reiki is a method of connecting universal energy with the body’s innate power of healing. Reiki is simple and anybody can learn it. Self-treatment amplifies the life force energy in our body releasing the withheld emotions and energy blocks. Many people find it extremely effective for relaxation and find that they have a deep sense of wellbeing, peace and harmony on all levels following a treatment. What is it good for?It has become a useful form of relaxation and connecting to friends for many students in the ChillOut Society and some of us use it in combination with various forms of massage. There are frequent meetings of ChillOut society members swapping healings and plenty of opportunities to receive healings (see below).Does it not drain the person giving the healing? Not if it is practised correctly. When working on others, Reiki is not ‘given’, it is made available. The client draws the energy they require. They must therefore wish to receive the healing. How do I learn Reiki?Reiki is traditionally divided into 3 levels, known as ‘degrees’, and at each degree you receive an attunement as well as training in how to work on this level. Reiki 1The first degree will hugely increase your natural ability to channel healing and familiarise you with chakras and healing modes. We normally run this with 12 students over a Saturday and Sunday, normally something like 10am-5pm both days. This is an exciting introduction to Reiki and many people do this in order to find out about energy work, discover whether it is something they like. Some people are happy with the ability they have from this to look after their health and that of others. Some can’t wait to take it to the next level! Reiki 2The second degree gives you a further increase in vibratory level as well as an increase in the power of your healing abilities. You will learn symbols to aid you and special emotional, mental and distance healing methods. Most people who take the Reiki II attunement become very powerful healers and notice further positive changes in their lives and how they live them. The Reiki II attunement is normally run as a single day workshop on a Saturday or Sunday, in a group of 6.Reiki 3 'Master' The third degree is the Master level and at this level one dedicates oneself to healing and learns to attune others. In the ChillOut Society we run Reiki attunements whenever there is enough interest. Once a student is initiated by a Reiki master it is there for life. Even if one doesn’t practice it one doesn’t forget Reiki, its always there. Attunement affects each person individually depending on their vibratory level. One can increase the energy level and healing capacity bypracticing daily and treating oneself. How much does an attunement cost? ChillOut organises attunements for a larger group to help students to be able to afford attunements. The cost will depend on how many people are doing it. For students it normally costs around £30 for Reiki 1, and £50 for Reiki 2, but this depends a lot on class size. Non-students and students who are not at the University of Edinburgh will pay more, as the university supplements the running of the ChillOut Society. When is your next course? Courses run during term time, according to demand. There is normally a Reiki 1 in the first term, perhaps a second Reiki 1 in the second term, and if there is enough interest, a Reiki 2 usually runs during the second term.
